Legal / Privacy

Data, PIPEDA, and the search-advertising cookies

How Spadina & Bremner Quarterly handles personal information under Canadian PIPEDA, including a plain-language note on search advertising cookies.

This notice is for Spadina & Bremner Quarterly, operated by Dr. Henrik Lindqvist at 15 Iceboat Terrace, Suite 408, Toronto, Ontario. I follow Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act because this is a Canadian desk writing about a Canadian street. I do not have affiliates worldwide. I have a suite, a window, and a small search-advertising allotment so Railway Lands research can find the notes.

If you only read pages, I may see a server log: Internet Protocol address, browser type, pages requested, time. That is how I know a page broke. Logs rotate. I do not sell lists. If you email or send a letter, I have whatever you put in it. I use that only to answer you. Paper is shredded when the thread is done. Email sits in an ordinary inbox. Write if you want a thread deleted; I will delete it unless a legal demand says otherwise, which has not happened in the life of this quarterly.

Search advertising cookies

I run a modest search campaign so people looking up Railway Lands weather, queue timing, the revolving dining room, or the roof walk can find these notes. That campaign uses advertising cookies and similar tags from the search network. They help the network know whether an advertisement was shown and whether someone reached this site. They are not required to read the quarterly. Block them and the pages still work. I do not see your search history. I may see aggregate numbers. I do not combine those cookies with your letters. I do not use them to price a ticket, because I do not sell tickets, take reservations, or handle payments.

Those cookies are set by the advertising companies, not by this desk. You can refuse non-essential cookies in your browser, use a tracker blocker, or adjust advertisement settings with the search network. I will not pretend I can switch their systems off from Iceboat Terrace. I can promise I will not bolt extra marketing pixels onto these pages for someone else’s product, and I will not share letters with an advertising network.

Your PIPEDA rights

You can ask what personal information I have about you, ask for a correction, and withdraw consent for anything that was optional — the advertisements, a reply you no longer want. Write to [email protected] or to the CityPlace address. I will answer in a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. I would rather fix it first. I do not process payments. I do not take identification at a door. I do not run accounts. The heaviest profile I might have is an email that says the upper cabin was out. Guard that as you see fit; it is still personal information even when it is only weather.
